Sandoval pinching himself after World Series heroics

Pablo Sandoval says he realised a dream as he inspired San Francisco to an 8-3 win over Detroit in the MLB World Series on Wednesday.

The Venezuelan became just the fourth player to hit three home runs in a World Series clash as the Giants took the opening game at AT&T Park.

Sandoval connected twice against Justin Verlander, who is considered one of the best pitchers in the league, and once off Al Alburquerque.

But the 26-year-old said he was staying focused ahead of Game 2 on Thursday.

"I still can't believe it. It's things like this you'll never forget, especially in the World Series - you dream of this as a little kid. Hitting three home runs ... it's too much for me right now," Sandoval said.

"I didn't think about it (hitting a third home run). I just tried to calm myself down in the home play and get a pitch I could hit.

"And that was the result - all the things I've been doing. I just calmed down and got a pitch. And then you see a result.

"It's exciting. To be part of history is one if the things you'll never forget. But you have to keep playing your game. You have to keep focused and keep doing your thing."

Sandoval hit a solo home run in the first inning, a two-run shot in the third and another bases-empty strike in the fifth.

He joined Babe Ruth (1926 and 1928), Reggie Jackson (1977) and Albert Pujols (2011) as the only players to hit three homers in a World Series game.

Giants pitcher Jeremy Affeldt paid tribute to Sandoval and said he deserved even more credit for managing two home runs against Verlander.

"The way he saw the ball, hit it to dead centre twice and went up the other time - that just shows you how strong he is, and when he's locked in he can be a dangerous hitter," he said.
