Viking Peterson named NFL MVP

3 February 2013 05:54

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson completed his fairytale return from knee surgery to become the NFL's Most Valuable Player.

Peterson helped his side reach the NFL playoffs, where they lost to the Green Bay Packers 24-10 at Lambeau Field in early January.

The 27-year-old had a standout year, running for 2109 yards - nine short of the all-time record held by Eric Dickerson.

And fresh from winning the game's highest individual honour, Peterson was already setting his sights on team glory next season.

"I was hoping to come back and lead my team to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately that didn't happen," Peterson told reporters.

"I played my heart out every opportunity that I had, and the result of that was not what I wanted, but I got a couple good pieces of hardware to bring back."

He added: "Hopefully next year I'll win this award again because I'll be winning the most important award, the team award, the Super Bowl."

Peterson beat Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning for the gong, winning the vote count 30.5 to 19.5.

Manning, however, took home the award for best comeback in the NFL this season, as the playmaker recovered from multiple neck surgeries which caused him to miss the entire 2011-12 season.

He was released by former club the Indianapolis Colts, but went on to lead Denver to the AFC West title this season, and the comeback was made more remarkable give Manning's admission the diagnosis was indeterminable.

"This injury was really unlike any other. There was no bar or standard or somebody's notes to copy. We were sort of coming up with the rehab plan as we went."
