Rice remembers sleepless Super Bowl

1 February 2013 21:09

In the lead-up to this year's NFL decider, Jerry Rice has revealed he did not sleep before his first Super Bowl when he won the MVP award.

Rice's old team, the San Francisco 49ers, will take on the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans on Sunday and the 50-year-old former wide receiver has enjoyed reminiscing about his three NFL championships with the California-based franchise.

In 1989, Rice caught a 14-yard pass from Joe Montana to draw San Francisco level in the fourth quarter as the 49ers went on to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16 but despite winning the game's MVP award, the wide receiver admitted he did not have the ideal preparation to the match.

"My first Super Bowl I remember going to the stadium, I hadn't slept all night so I went to the stadium and I fell asleep on the table," Rice said.

"I was tired. I'd been up pacing around trying to put myself (in) different situations, I was exhausted, went there early.

"My team-mates thought I was crazy.

"I'd prepared all week long and was ready to play the football game and then come kick-off time it was time to go. That's what you live for, that excitement."

That was the first of three Super Bowl victories for Rice in his 15 years with San Francisco.

The 49ers have a fearless record when it comes to the NFL's showpiece game having never lost in their five Super Bowl appearances.

The Ravens have only been involved in two Super Bowls, winning XXXV in 2000 when they thumped the New York Giants 34-7.
