Fickle weather hits New Orleans for Super Bowl

31 January 2013 16:35

Super Bowl XVLII is just a few days away but inclement weather conditions are already playing a part.

The much-anticipated clash between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens in New Orleans is big news in America.

But storms and heavy winds have hit the area in recent days, causing headaches and scheduling problems for organisers.

The 49ers were forced to train in the indoor facility of the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday just to complete their session.

"We were going to go outside and practice but the winds were a little too much," said San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh.

"We were worried about taking the lifts (for team photographers) too high. The winds were 20 to 25 miles an hour and we don't want to send our guys up there in those conditions."

The indoor facility allowed San Francisco to complete training, but Tulane University where Baltimore are training has no indoor practice arenas.

That meant that both teams may have had to train in the same arena, although the weather picked up in the afternoon allowing the Ravens to complete their session.

Lights have recently been installed at the New Orleans Superdome as the countdown to Sunday's big game continues.
